Haven Integrated Stacking/Packaging System

Reducing workplace injuries and increasing productivity is a common goal for all manufacturers. Haven Manufacturing is helping a leading Midwest tube producer achieve those goals by developing a 4-axis robotic packaging system and integrating it with a cut-to-length and brush de-burring line. What once required 3 or 4 people to operate a line, including manually packaging product, now takes one operator and one part-time material handler. The customer produces a wide range of conduit diameters from 1.0” to 4.50” and wall thickness from .049” to .237”. The equipment had to be flexible, reliable and user-friendly. The process begins with a Soco Model SA-115NC-CL2 sawing machine with automatic bundle loading and servo length control. Cut tubes are deposited onto a Haven built conveyor, which transfers and diverts the tube into a Haven Model #970 Wire Brush De-burring machine. As the tubes exit the brush machine, they are deposited onto a preparation table that orients them for pick-up by the packaging robot. The pickup head design is electro-magnet, with head motion of X, Y, Z and 90° rotation. Several packaging patterns are pre-programmed to allow for quick and easy changeover for diameter, length and container size. This particular application requires a material handler to forklift out the full container and replace it with an empty container. The container orientation is guided by a two-sided fixed locator with electronic position verification. The process cycle time allows enough time to exchange containers without delaying production. Haven also has the option of adding an automatic container egress and ingress conveyance system.

873 Servo Dual-Blade Shear Cutoff and Inspection Machine
Haven Combines Technologies to Solve Integration Challenge

A leading commercial fire sprinkler system company chose Haven Manufacturing to design and build a tube cutting and length inspection line that would integrate with their downstream threading process and with their factory ERP system. Being a liability sensitive industry, sprinkler systems are built to very stringent safety and production guidelines. A sprinkler system is made up of three primary components; header, down pipe and sprinkler head. In this application, the Haven Model #873 Servo dual-blade shear cutoff is cutting and inspecting for length accuracy prior to the down pipe entering the customers threading process. Generally, the down pipe is made in sequence to the overall system layout. That means one tube at a time is cut and threaded and then labeled for part number and installation sequence identity. The menu of pipe lengths and quantities is generated by an ERP system and is sent remotely to the Haven cutoff. The cutoff automatically adjusts for length via a servo controlled linear actuator. After the pipe is cut, it is transferred to a length measuring station to verify that the pipe matches the original input. Since each pipe could be a different length, the measurement system must also automatically adjust to accept the new pipe. This is also done through a servo controlled linear actuator. The pipe is then transferred to the customer's threading operation, again in the sequence ordered by the ERP schedule. All of the data is returned to the ERP system to verify production accuracy.

Revolutionary Shear Blade Coating for Stainless Steel Tube

Haven Manufacturing Corporation in cooperation with Tru-Cut Saw, Inc., is introducing a new cross-cut and shear blade coating that significantly improves blade life when cutting austenitic stainless steels.

The new nanocomposite PVD coating that Tru-Cut Saw, Brunswick, OH, is using to dramatically increase the life of circular saw blades, is now available for trial to Haven customers for their dual-blade shear blades. The new coating, called ViTA-Nano and developed by Tru-Cut’s ICO Surface Coatings Division, is a proprietary combination of titanium, aluminum, aluminum-titanium, chrome and silicon. Unlike multilayer coatings in which each material is deposited consecutively, with ViTA-Nano all cathodes in the PVD chamber are turned on at once. This reportedly results in a more cohesive, harder coating.

Haven Solves Tool Design for Unique Tubular Shape

One major advantage of Haven’s Dual-Blade shear cutoff technology is the ability to cut a variety of tubular shapes. Haven has been presented with many clamp die design challenges over the years, but none quite like this one. This asymmetrical figure-8 part is used in off-road recreational vehicles. The part could be circular saw cut, but due to high volume requirements, the customer would save a lot of money cutting it on their existing Haven Model #873 cutoff. Haven engineers were able to figure the correct point of entry for the shear blade, but knowing how all the remaining surfaces would shear was a challenge. At one angle, the top half of the part would shear properly, but the lower half was at risk of collapsing or deforming. Turn the part on another angle and the results could be the opposite. With the help of AutoDesk Inventor, the engineers were able to model a pre-determined shear path that had the best chance of succeeding.

The application required testing before the customer could commit to switching their production over to the Haven cutoff. Haven manufactured a set of production ready clamp dies for the test. With a few tweaks to the shear blade profile, the part sheared successfully, with no deformation and very little burr. The only charge to the customer was for the set of dies. Wheatland produces heavy wall pipe fittings. Haven Trim Machine Provides Fast, Low Cost Solution

Stam, Inc. of Mentor, OH is a tubular fabricator specializing in heavy truck and machinery applications. Most of their products go through a bending process. Air Bag Manufacturer Purchases Turnkey System

Haven is supplying a leading Midwest air bag manufacturer with a complete tube processing line. The line consists of a bundle unloader that feeds a tube polishing unit to remove the black oxide from the tube. From there, the tube is transferred to a Haven Model 620 Kleencut supported shear cutoff. The cut tubes are automatically conveyed to an elevating system that transfers the tubes up and into a Model 939 double end finishing machine. The final section of this integrated line is to inspect every part for correct length and then to load four tubes at a time into the customer supplied parts washing machine. Model 873 Dual-Blade Shear Cutoff Haven Model 873 Dual-Blade Shear Cutoff Design Improvements.
Most of the design improvements have been made in the controls.

A. High efficiency hydraulic motor.

B. Improved hydraulic design; including stand-alone tank assembly.

C. Crop-cut and decel switches removed from the bundle loader. The operator no longer has to set these switches; it is done automatically in the program.

D. The tube bundle can now have varying lengths, with no additional setup required.

E. The Tube Stop length adjustment is controlled from the operator's panel, not from the end of the Tube Stop. A large digital display shows on the panel.

F. New cutoff guard design is more durable and easier to open. It also better protects the operator.

Model 939 End Finisher Haven Model 939 End Finisher Design Improvements
This machine has seen several changes to its design.

A. Precision machined base.

B. Precision ground rails and bearing blocks supporting the
spindle bases.

C. Spindles and spindle housings have been changed to bearing supported assemblies. The old design uses bronze bushings to support spindle rotation.

D. With the above improvements, this machine has been transformed from a “chamfer” machine to a precision metal removal machine. Length and end squareness accuracy is much better.

E. This new construction adds life to the machine. Its capability will remain constant for much longer versus the old bushing machine.

This Chinese company decided to buy a new Haven dual-blade shear cutting machine in order to get Haven’s certified service guarantee for 90 days. The new Haven machine is to accompany two used dual-blade machines they brought through the American market and not directly through Haven. The only way for Haven to get used machines up to spec and get Haven’s certified quality is to ship the entire machine to Haven’s plant. Used machines are not brought up to spec in the field. Brunswick, GA – July 11, 2013 -According to a recent academic paper, titled “The China Toll”, the United States lost more than 2.7 million jobs to China in the years between 2001 and 2011. Haven Manufacturing, the well-known Georgia based manufacturer of machinery and equipment for tube and bar processing, is doing their part to fight the trend of continued American job and manufacturing loss to Asia.

Last year Oddello Industries, a Tennessee based manufacturer of high quality metal, tube, pipe, composite, and MDF components for OEMs in a variety of industries, purchased a dual-blade cutoff machine from Haven as part of the development of a process to manufacture several individual parts from 1” square tube to be packaged, along with a variety of sheet-metal stampings, into high quality adjustable mattress foundations. The state of Tennessee alone has lost well over 56,000 manufacturing jobs, more than 2% of the state’s total employment, to China based companies in the past decade. Oddello, by partnering with proven America based equipment suppliers like Haven Manufacturing, has shown itself to be able to compete for, and win, business back from China based manufacturing concerns. Oddello’s capable engineering staff partnered with Haven’s engineers to develop a fully programmable process which couples a piercer, designed and manufactured by Criterion Machinery, with a Haven Servo Dual-Blade Shear Cutoff machine. The resulting process has proven able to process nearly 15 miles of tube per day into 38 unique parts (SKUs) within length tolerances that never exceed 0.0015 inch.

The Oddello-Haven collaboration has proven so successful that Oddello’s management recently decided to expand the tube stamping and cutting operation. Not only is this great news for the company and its employees, but it is great news for the people and community of Morristown. The additional jobs and income provided by the expansion will undoubtedly improve the quality of life for many people in

Fabricated tubes are processed and used for a wide variety of structural, plumbing, and manufacturing applications. Steel is often used for construction tubes over other metals like aluminum when extra strength is necessary. Steel tubes are also used in automotive applications and as parts of furniture or other manufactured consumer products. Aluminum, and other alloys, are widely used for a variety of tube applications because of the unique properties of each alloy that lends additional functionality to the particular piece of equipment or process that each part is intended to be used with.

Fabricators are generally somewhat familiar with the “tube cutoff machine.” Cutoff machines are in wide use around the world and achieve their purpose, a cleanly cut and accurate length tube without any unintended crimping or malformation of the tube end. In order to process a tube quickly and efficiently (profitably), the end-cut most often needs to be made very quickly. The process of getting the tube to the cutting device, accurately measuring the tube length before the cut is achieved, and cutting the tube so that the diameter or the “roundness” of the tube remains true, can be much more difficult than it seems. Moving a tube into a tube cutoff machine and, potentially, into other manufacturing processes is not as straightforward as sheet handling. Sheet metal is not likely to roll away or shift out of position.

There are five primary factors that fabricators should keep in mind when specifying and designing an optimal automatic material handling system for any tube-cutoff operation.

   • What length tube will be processed?

If the fabricator is working with a single tube length, the material handling system is usually much simpler than when working with multiple length tubes. The tube bundle, as packaged from the raw material supplier, is placed in a loading device, usually a nylon belt or sling which allows the tubes to flow freely within the cradle. The procedure described in the previous paragraph is most efficient for high-volume applications in which the same length cut will be performed hundreds of times and allows for extremely high material handling speeds, increasing overall efficiency. Many modern fabricators are embracing the trend towards lower volume tube processing in which a high variability of lengths are processed. This trend, often referred to as “just-in-time” manufacturing, requires a cutoff machine with more flexible feed options and the ability to pre-program a variety of part lengths to be cut.

Servo hitch feeds offer this flexibility for modern tube-cutoff machines. Instead of relying on the tube stop to determine cut-length, the machine operator can program a variety of cut-lengths before the cradle is loaded with material. When the tubes are indexed into the machine, a servo controlled linear rail first securely clamps the tube to be cut, then moves the material forward to the precise length programed by the operator, achieving an exact, and variable according to the operator’s pre-determined program, cut length. Finished tube length should help the process designer determine what type of transfer system is used, but the process designer also needs to consider the next step, after the tube is cut to the proper length, in the tube finishing process. The secondary operation: de-burring, testing, washing, packaging, or a combination of operations- should also be a major consideration when determining a material transfer system.

The process designer should also consider the probable length range of the processed tubes. To cut short-length tubes it may be necessary to integrate a hopper feeding system that accepts randomly distributed raw lengths and re-orients the unprocessed tubes into a pre-determined pattern for feeding into the cutoff machine. Short lengths can be efficiently transferred by a “stair step” style of elevating system that indexes parts one flight at a time, up and into a magazine loading rack. Long-length tubes are easily controlled through a simple drop box system or a conveyor kick-off device that converts the tubes from an end-to-end orientation to a side-by-side orientation. The tubes can then be indexed one at a time into the next operation.

   • What is the weight of the tube to be processed?

Any material handling system needs to be designed to meet the maximum probable stress. If the system is intended to process small diameter or light material such as aluminum tubes, weight should not be of too much concern. These materials are typically light enough that off-the-shelf, aluminum frame conveyors can be easily integrated into the system design. Larger diameter and heavy-wall tube, because of its increased weight, presents much more of a challenge to the system designer. It is important that any system be built to withstand the potential day-to-day abuse that is inherent when handling larger and heavier material. These more rigorous systems require custom design and fabrication work; off-the-shelf systems won’t withstand the increased abuse that is inherent when handling larger, heavier materials.

   • How many stations in the manufacturing process?

Most simple processes, those with the least number of steps, can rely of gravity as an efficient means of moving work from one station to the next. The best option may be to simply move the tube in process to a chute and let it drop into place for the next step. For applications in which multiple stations are required and a greater degree of control is needed, gravity-fed systems may not be the best solution. For more complex processes a transfer system, such as a “walking beam” or “pick and place gripper” system is often the best solution.

A “gripper” system is often the best choice when shorter length material is to be processed. The overhead gripper is used to pick each individual piece of work-in-progress and move it to the next station. The “walking beam” system relies on an integrated cam system to lift and move the in-process tubes from one station to the next. An example of a typical process in which the “walking beam” system might be the best choice is a double –end chamfering operation with length checking. The process would start with a tube, already cut to the desired length in the cut-off station, feeding into a station in which both ends of the tube are machined. The walking beam rotates and retrieves the newly machined tube, moves it to the next station where it is fed into a measurement unit to verify the length of the tube. The tube is then moved, again by the walking beam, to a third station where a blower removes the chips and debris left in the tube interior by the machining process. The process is repeated for each tube as the tubes are deposited into a collection area to await the next step of the manufacturing process.

   • What type of finished work collection system should be used?

Gravity is the most typical and usually the most efficient conveyance method for finished tubes. This method works best in a scenario in which large numbers of the same length material are processed. The material typically rolls down a short incline into a collection rack or bin and is ready to be conveyed to the next step in the manufacturing process. If the manufacturer plans to cut multiple length tubes within the same setup, he may want to invest in equipment capable of handling the varied length parts. By relying on the data used to program the variable length tube cuts made in the first step of the process, the operator can program the collection system to trigger exit locations from the conveyor collection system into individual collection points for each length tube. When those containers are filled, they are moved to specific production lines and a new collection bin continues to collect the specified length finished tubes.

   • If the tube finish is a concern

An important consideration for any collection system is the potential for damage to processed tubes at the collection point. If the tubes are collected in a parallel manner (side-by-side) they with typically “cushion” themselves as they are dropped from the collection incline into the collection bin. The potential for damage is greatest when a tube is dropped on its end, which will often distort the end of the dropped tube and potentially mar the exterior of the struck tube.

If the tube to be processed requires a surface-sensitive finish, nylon gripping surfaces are typically used to eliminate the potential for marring the material during transfer between stations. To avoid possible damage that can occur with gravity-fed collection and transfer systems, magnets or vacuum cups can be used to transfer materials.

Weidman is one of those rare individuals who realized their life’s calling while still attending high school. That realization, at a relatively young age, brings the benefit of many years dedicated to the design and manufacture of control systems and machinery, to the already talented Haven design team.

After that early realization of his career goals, and in order to earn the funds required to pursue his future EE degree, Mr. Weidman joined the army after his high school graduation. The training, discipline, and experience he received while serving his country proved to be invaluable when Weidman entered the University of Louisville in 1991. While at the University, Mike’s experience and work-ethic landed a coveted internship with a locally based, well-known manufacturer of high-quality tools, where he performed so well that the company continued his employment on a full-time basis while Weidman finished his engineering degree. This opportunity gave Weidman valuable experience in the controls industry. Since that time, Mr. Weidman has consistently shown his talent and attention to detail, as well as his willingness to test new technologies, as he has moved up into positions of higher responsibility and greater challenge within the Louisville area OEM industry. For the past 15 years, Mr. Weidman worked for a leading manufacturer of high-speed food packaging equipment based in the Louisville (KY) area. Haven Rebuild Costs Rising
Haven’s reputation for designing and building the most robust machines in the industry is further enhanced by our very popular cutoff head re-build program. On average, with proper lubrication and maintenance, the Haven Dual-Blade Shear Cutoff will provide un-interrupted service for an average of ten years, depending on the severity of the application. With the Haven cutoff head re-build program, customers can realize decades of reliable service. Haven first introduced the Model #872 Cutoff in 1984, and many of these machines are still in operation. In 1995, Haven introduced the Model #873 that included improved features, such as quick change dies. The old Model #872 is now between 18 and 29 years old. It is becoming more and more expensive to manufacturer and stock parts and to purchase supplied parts that are unique to this model. Consequently, the cost of re-building a #872 head has increased substantially.

Haven must acknowledge that the Model #872 cutoff is nearing the point in its life cycle where the economics of keeping it going are stressed, and that continuing to stock spare parts has and will cost more with time. Therefore, effective with this announcement, the price to re-build the Haven Model #872 cutoff head and parts unique to the #872 cutoff lines will be increased. It should also be mentioned that the electronic and hydraulic systems have or are approaching obsolescence.

Challenge
Last year Tenneco was approached withan opportunity to capture additional market share by supplying ride control products for one of the leading manufacturers of high end sport/luxury vehicles at one of their state-of-the-art North American manufacturing facilities. A major challenge that the opportunity presented was the higher tolerances that the potential customer required in the manufacture of their shock absorbers. Paul Studebaker, Manufacturing Engineer for Tenneco’s Kettering (Ohio) manufacturing plant, has worked in several capacities of increasing responsibility inthe Kettering facility since he graduated from Wright State University near Detroit with a degree in Systems Engineering. Throughout his 20+ years in the automotive parts manufacturing business, he had not been required to produce a product with the demanding tolerances that would be required to meet this contract’s specifications. He welcomed the challenge and began researching new methods and manufacturing equipment that would help him meet those high specifications. As part of the process of researching equipment that would meet their needs, Studebaker spoke with David Anderson, Advanced Manufacturing Engineer incharge of tubing capacity for ride control at Tenneco’s Hartwell (GA) manufacturing plant. Anderson had used Haven Manufacturing’s equipment since the late 1970s with excellent results. According to Anderson, they stick with Haven because, “we have had very good results with the durability of Haven machines.” He alsocites the quick changeover and the high output of his Haven equipment as major factors in his recommendation of Haven for the Kettering plant. Studebaker was familiar with Haven equipment and had actually purchased a used Haven machinefor another manufacturing process in the Kettering plant after seeing it in use at one of the company’s Canada facilities. He had been impressed with the durability and output of the Haven manufactured equipment and decided to move forward with Anderson’s recommendation.

Haven Solution
Working with Studebaker and Anderson, Haven Manufacturing was able to design a custom built “Single End Tube Finishing Machine.” One of the concerns that Tenneco had about the manufacturing process for the new product was the thinner walled tubes that would need to be processed. Tenneco believed that the Haven design would give them better control for the “neck down” chamfering and finishing process during the manufacture of the outer housing of the shock absorber and to help assure that the housing remained within the tolerance established by their customer. Studebaker is quick to note that, “during the design process Haven was very communicative and easy to work with.” Adding that when he visited the Haven manufacturing facility in Brunswick (GA) he asked for “a few small modifications” and Haven was very quick to comply.

Although still in the product launch phase of the new manufacturing process, Studebaker is pleased with the results he has achieved so far. “We needed better control and Haven was able to work with us to provide a machine that gives us that control.”

Dual-Blade 873 Servo machine New Servo Motor Driven Tube Re-cut Machine Announced by Haven Manufacturing
Brunswick, GA – August 6, 2012 - Haven Manufacturing, the industry leader in the design and production of reliable, performance enhancing tube and bar cutting machines, is excited to premier the latest addition to their highly respected product line. The Haven Model #873 Servo Tube Recut Machine enables manufacturers to cut round, square, and rectangular tubing to a variety of precise lengths quickly and automatically. By feeding the material to be cut through the integrated servo motor controlled linear slide, the Haven machine is able to be pre-programmed by the operator to cut multiple length and quantity parts from each individual mill length tube, maximizing material use and minimizing both wasted time and money.

The cutoff process begins when mill length tube bundles up to 30” in diameter are placed into the integrated loader/un-scrambler by overhead hoist or forklift. The tubes are then gently lifted by five elevating slings to load position, where single tubes gravity feed onto an inclined table that controls the feed rate into the re-cut machine. As each individual tube reaches loading position, it feeds into v-rollers and is ready to advance towards the Haven cutting head. At this point the tube is gripped by a set of slide clamps controlled by the highly precise integrated servo motor and is moved forward into the, now open, dual-blade cutoff head to the exact length required. The Model #873 utilizes the same reliable dual-blade, shear tube recut technology utilized in Haven tube recut machines worldwide for over 30 years. As the tube is being cut, the slide clamp retracts to its original position and is ready to advance the tube to the next pre-programmed cutting length. It sounds as if a lot is going on, and it is, but the Haven Model #873 accomplishes the shearing process in just fractions of a second. The time-proven Haven system can achieve up to 3000 cycles per hour while producing cut-to-length tubes from ½” up to mill length.

Haven Model 922 End Finisher Receives Design Update
Haven Manufacturing, a worldwide leader in the manufacture of high quality and dependable machinery for tube and bar cutting, finishing, and processing has recently updated the design of the well-known and widely used Model #922 End Finisher.

The Haven Model #922 is already respected worldwide for it’s ability to process short part lengths. The recent modifications to the Model 922 design give the unit the ability to handle parts as short as 1.0”. The maximum part length for this model remains 8.0”. Haven has also redesigned the machine’s single plane horizontal part clamping system to eliminate the need for multiple clamp adjustments and to allow for faster, more accurate, and repeatable centering of the part. The addition of the Feedall Dual Lane Orienting Conveyor system saves time by eliminating the need to orient parts prior to processing. Parts to be processed can be loaded in bulk from tote pans, hoppers, or by conveyors from a previous operation - saving time and money by eliminating an additional step from the process.

The Haven Model 922 is designed with two moveable spindle heads mounted on precision ground rails over an all steel welded base and, like all Haven products, is designed to last. The 922 features motorized lead-screw length adjustment with a digital readout, quick-change features for tools and tube escapement, easy to operate spindle feeds and speed control and can be used to process a wide variety of carbon steels, alloys, and stainless steels. The twin spindle heads simultaneously chamfers both inside and outside and faces the end of the processed part, leaving a smooth finish. Haven Manufacturing Corporation, exclusive sales and service representative for SOCO Machinery of Taiwan, has sold a SA-65 CNC Tube and Bar Machining Center to a Chicago based manufacturer. The SA-65 combines 4 processes into one machine; including, sawing, machining (chamfer, face, centering), flushing and optional length measuring. Additional optional machining units can be added; such as, threading, turning, tapping and drilling. The SA-65 is equipped with a full bundle loading system, 5-7 CNC servo controlled axes and SOCO’s exclusive i2 Software (intelligent interface). The machine has a capacity of up to 65mm diameter and lengths from 25mm to 350mm.

Haven, SOCO Form Strategic Alliance
Haven Mfg. Corp., Brunswick, Ga., has formed a strategic alliance with SOCO Machinery Co., Ltd. of Taiwan to sell and service respective lines of tube cutting equipment. Company President Dave Erickson said the partnership provides Haven an outstanding opportunity to grow within the Asian markets, while SOCO's growth in the U.S. market is enhanced through Haven's broad market knowledge and reputation.
Haven will have exclusive U.S. rights to sell SOCO's line of automated tube saws, solid bar saws and tube and bar machining centers. SOCO will represent Haven in China and Southeast Asia for their line of Dual-Blade and Supported Shear tube cutting machines.

Haven Enters Oil & Gas Industry
    Haven Manufacturing Corporation, Brunswick, GA, announces its first entry into the oil & gas industry. Haven Manufacturing, recognized worldwide as a leader in integrated tube processing systems, has expanded its material handling and systems control knowledge into the oil & gas pipe testing market. In cooperation with Patterson Tubular of Houston and Olympus of Quebec, Haven has designed a gantry and rail system that will support a full body Phased Array ultrasonic tester.
    The capacity of this system is from 2.50" to 20.00" diameter and up to 48 feet long. Prior to testing, each pipe is measured for length. A walking beam transfer device then positions the pipe in to the test station, while simultaneously removing a tested pipe. In the testing station, the pipe is rotated at a controlled RPM to match the specified linear speed of the ultrasonic tester carriage. Multiple servo drives control the synchronization of the test cycle. Manipulating up to 24000 pounds of pipe at one time requires both precision and robust construction.
